With spring now in full swing, there’s no better time to liven up your home décor by adding some greenery. Not only will this visually freshen up a space, but plants actively purify the air leading to a happier and healthier home.
Don’t know the difference between kale and a cactus? We’ve curated a list of the top indoor plants and why they’re so popular.
1. Rubber Plant
Fiddle Leaf Who? With the rubber plant finally dethroning the temperamental fiddle leaf fig as Australia’s favourite indoor house plant, you’d better be-leaf this plant should be at the top of your list. Depending on the size of your pot, a rubber plant will grow large in big pot or stay small in a little pot. Water these bad boys regularly, give them a bit of sunbaking time and be sure to wipe their leaves of dust to encourage growth.
2. Mother in Law’s Tongue
We love this plant for its cheeky* name alone, not to mention that it’s well suited to those whose thumb colours are more black than green – so it’s perfect for a budding indoor gardener. These guys have been doing the rounds on Instagram and Pinterest because they’re super hardy and require minimal maintenance. Not only this, but this plant cleans air better than almost any other indoor plant – forget those expensive air purifiers.

3. Peace Lily
Talk about a hard worker – the peace lily not only actively purifies air by up to 60 percent, but also reduces the levels of mould spores in your home. It also happens to be one of the few flowering indoor house plants and it thrives in humid conditions. Why not try adding one of these plants to your bathroom, where it will absorb the excess moisture in the air resulting in less mildew for you? It’s a win win!
4. Monstera Deliciosa
Ever heard of #MonsteraMonday? If not, then head to Instagram to check out why hipsters are loving this plant so much that it has its own day. Monsteras are not your small kind of house plant and need plenty of room to grow, so be sure to choose a large pot for your plant baby to flourish in. Like the peace lily, monsteras also thrive in humid conditions and so make great plants where there is plenty of natural light available (like in a bathroom).
5. Devil’s Ivy
Aptly named because it’s so hard to kill and stays green even when kept in the dark, this plant is one of the hardiest indoor plants you’ll come by. Happy to sit pretty anywhere you put it, in any size pot you like, Devil’s ivy will survive against all odds – just be sure to give it regular water. If the vines are getting a little long and untamed, simply cut off established leaves and pop into some water to grow new roots and new plant babies!
